Tom worked in hospitals and physician offices for over 44 years. Most recently, before retiring in October 2012, Tom was the CIO at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, IL from 1989 to 2012. Prior to work as a CIO he was a hospital industrial engineer and then a hospital administrator for a total of 14 years.
At NorthShore (previously Evanston Northwestern Healthcare) Tom lead the IT efforts from 1989 and was the CIO in 2001 when Evanston selected Epic to be their system wide EMR. This was Epic’s first complete hospital install and went live in 2003 across all three hospitals and 200+ physician offices. Evanston was awarded the HIMSS’s Davies Award in 2004. Tom served on the Davies Enterprise Committee for 2004 to 2012, serving as Chair in 2010 and making several onsite inspections. Along the way NorthShore also did over 100 site visits for prospective Epic clients and Tom spoke at many national and international events.
In 2009, NorthShore was selected as the first Stage 7 hospital. Tom continues to volunteer as a Stage 7 inspector for HIMSS Analytics.
Tom has been active in several organizations with LFHIMSS, LFACHE and CHIME-Emeritus member designations.
Tom and his family have been long time University of Michigan supporters and enjoy traveling in Europe. Since his retirement, Tom has done some limited consulting and been active in the University of Chicago Continuing Education program in literature and history.
